我想问的是，是不是既能够填where，马上后面看作定语从句，balance作抽象的“地址”定义？又可以填入that，马上后面看作同位语从句，讲解balance的内容？
假如不可以的话，又是为何？

从网上资料来看，这是2016年的英语专业4级考试试题，后来又被多次用作考博或考研模拟题。四个备选项分别为：A where B in which C when Dhow 给出的答案是in which。即出题人觉得这是定语从句。若是定语从句，则很难排除where。虽然in which引导定语从句较where更为正式，但where也并不是完全非正式用词，而是介于正式与非正式之间的普通用词。因此，作为考考试试题，让考生在in which 和where 之间做选择，实为强人所难。
于是我猜测，可能大家可以理解这个从句是抽象的地址状语从句，由where 引导，where = in a situation in which 。如此，就能排除其它三个选项。比如 where在下句中的使用方法：
We must be especially carefulwherechildren are concerned.
